Why pairing up can slim you down

Working out with a friend is more enjoyable - and it can help you get a leaner body.

You might not have set any exercise goals back in January, but chances are you will now, what with summer - and more revealing clothes - right around the corner. One strategy that can help you get in shape fast while upping the fun factor: Find a workout partner. It makes you accountable to someone, so you are more apt to show up, it helps you pass the time on the treadmill; and it can prompt you to push yourself. To maximize your workout relationships, follow our buddy-up tips.

Chose the right person

Whether it is a friend, a relative, or a member of your running club, look for someone who is excited about working out and who seems knowledgeable about fitness. Notice we didn't mention exercising with your boyfriend or husband. Generally, we don't think it's wise to work out with your significant other. Hitting the gym at the same time is fine, but in our experience, coaching each other can cause more conflict than it's worth.

Use your partner for strength and flexibility moves

Sure, she can spot you on the chest press, but put her to work! Toss a medicine ball to each other, grab tubing and let the other person provide extra resistance, or work your abs with a double-knee drop.

Challenge each other on cardio machines

Take turns doing intervals (you rest while she sprints) or grab side-by-side rowing machines and race each other to see who finishes 500 meters first. This is an ideal opportunity to push your limits and have some friendly competition spur on you on.

Play follow the leader

Tired of thinking of new routines every time you go to the gym? Let your partner do it for you. Ask her to pick the workout you will both do, or you lead a set of one weight move3 and have her lead the next exercise.

Use each other for inspiration

Talk about the changes you are seeing ("Wow, your abs look great!") to encourage the other person. Or use your partner's good results to fuel your motivation. Just remember, you are not competing to see who gets the best body.

Let your buddy be strong when you are not

If you go out for a post-workout dinner and are tempted by the fettuccine Alfr4edo, let her order something healthy for you.
