Why fat accumulates in the waist and abs

The most common causes that makes fat accumulate in waist and abdomen are related to:

1. Bad eating habits

An excessive ingestion of calories in the form of fats, carbohydrates (bread, pasta, treats, candies) and alcohol.

Fried foods or using excessive amounts of fat in sauces, stews, etc.

Regular consumption of burgers.

Eat regularly toasts and butter at breakfast and snacks.

Eat less than 4 meals per day or not having breakfast, which causes a decline on the amount of calories burned, hence an increase on the fat accumulation in the abdomen.

Drink more than one glass of wine per day, in the case of women; and more than two glasses of wine daily, in the case of men. Up to these dose of alcohol can be burned without causing accumulation of fats in the abdomen, but if we exceed it, it would be difficult to avoid it.

2. Laziness

Watching TV several hours, office work or at the computer, going everywhere in car, are all daily habits that immobilize us great part of the day. Being inactive greatly diminishes the blood irrigation, therefore, less amount of oxygen gets to the fatty tissue. This prevents the fat burning and favors its accumulation, specially in the abdomen, which can lead to increase of cholesterol, blood pressure, etc.

3. Little physical or aerobic activity or the lack of it

Physical activity is the one who uses the fat deposits, specially the ones in the abdomen. Among the aerobic sports are, walking, running, bicycling, swimming, etc., as long as they are practiced frequently and not less than twice per week and for not less than 20 minutes.

4. Age

With age, the organism diminishes the calorie burning and increases the accumulation of fats in the abdomen. For example, while a teenager can burn between 2,000 and 2,500 calories per day, an adult woman burns between 1,500 and 2,000 calories per day, depending, in both cases, of the amount of physical activity.

5. Hormonal changes

In women, during pregnancy and breast feeding, the body accumulates fats as source for energy during the milk production process; after this period, it's very common that part of that fat remains on the body. During menopause, estrogens decrease favors the fat accumulation in the abdomen, similar to what happens to men, with age, there is a decrease in testosterone.

6. Stress

Stress also increases the possibilities of having adiposity located in the abdomen. Why? Because stress is a real response to our nervous system to alarm situations which stimulates the adrenal glands for the release of different hormones, particularly adrenaline and cortisol.
